Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners East Sheen
Gardeners East Sheen is committed to providing gardening services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our team members, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our objectives, responsibilities and procedures for managing health and safety across all gardening and grounds maintenance work.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property, and to promote a culture of safe working in every aspect of our services. We aim to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective control measures for all gardening and landscaping activities, including routine maintenance, one-off projects and seasonal work.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners East Sheen has overall responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented, maintained and regularly reviewed. Management will provide appropriate resources, including time, equipment and training, to ensure that health and safety standards are met. We will monitor performance, investigate incidents, and make necessary improvements to our procedures and practices.
Employee Responsibilities
All gardeners, supervisors and support staff are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and report hazards, near misses, accidents and unsafe practices to management without delay.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before commencing work, Gardeners East Sheen will assess the potential hazards associated with the task and the site. This includes considering terrain, weather conditions, access routes, proximity to roads or public areas, presence of overhead lines or underground services, and any specific client requirements. Where necessary, a written risk assessment and method statement will be prepared and communicated to all team members involved in the work.
Safe Use of Tools and Machinery
We are committed to the safe selection, use and maintenance of all tools and machinery used in our gardening services. Equipment, including lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, chainsaws and powered hand tools, will be inspected regularly and serviced in line with manufacturer guidance. Only trained and competent personnel are permitted to operate powered machinery. Guards, safety features and emergency stop devices must never be removed or overridden.
Personal Protective Equipment
Suitable personal protective equipment will be provided and used whenever risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, hard hats and respiratory protection, depending on the nature of the work. Employees are responsible for using PPE as instructed, checking its condition before use, and reporting any damage or defects.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening and grounds maintenance often involve lifting, carrying, digging and other physical tasks. To reduce the risk of injury, Gardeners East Sheen will provide guidance on safe manual handling techniques, use of mechanical aids where appropriate, and sensible planning of tasks to avoid excessive strain. Heavy or awkward loads should be shared or moved using appropriate equipment whenever possible.
Chemicals, Fertilisers and Green Waste
Where pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers or other chemical products are used, they will be stored, transported, mixed and applied in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant regulations. Only authorised and trained personnel will handle such products. Measures will be taken to prevent contamination of soil, drains and watercourses. Green waste will be handled and disposed of safely, taking care to avoid cuts, punctures, allergic reactions and biohazards such as mould or fungi.
Working at Height
Tasks such as tree pruning, hedge cutting and gutter clearance may require working at height. Gardeners East Sheen will use appropriate access equipment, such as ladders or mobile platforms, and ensure they are stable, inspected and used correctly. Work at height will be planned so that it is conducted by competent persons, with suitable fall prevention or protection measures in place.
Traffic, Public Areas and Client Premises
When working near roads, driveways or public footpaths, our teams will take steps to protect themselves and others. This may include using warning signs, barriers, high-visibility clothing and safe vehicle parking arrangements. We will maintain tidy work areas on client premises, minimise trip hazards, and keep tools and materials secure when not in use, especially in gardens and outdoor spaces accessible to children or pets.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners East Sheen will provide appropriate induction and ongoing training to employees so they understand the hazards associated with their work and the control measures in place. This includes instruction on equipment use, handling of hazardous substances, emergency procedures and safe working methods. Levels of supervision will reflect the complexity of tasks and the experience of individual team members.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. We will record incidents, investigate their causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. First aid supplies will be available to our teams, and employees will be informed about emergency contact arrangements and procedures for summoning assistance. Site-specific emergency information provided by clients will be followed at all times.
Health, Welfare and Environmental Considerations
We recognise the importance of general health and welfare in maintaining a safe working environment. Gardeners East Sheen will encourage sensible working practices that take account of weather conditions, hydration, sun protection and rest breaks during physically demanding tasks. We are committed to reducing environmental impact by minimising waste, avoiding pollution and handling materials responsibly as part of our overall approach to safe and sustainable gardening.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, working methods or legal requirements. Gardeners East Sheen will seek feedback from employees and clients to improve safety performance and will update procedures as necessary. All staff will be informed of any changes to ensure that the policy remains understood, implemented and effective.
